architects and interior designers
If you run an architecture practice, an interiors studio or a design-and-build firm in London, you already know the problem: the work is beautiful, the website is a portfolio, and the enquiries still come from referrals because nobody searching "architect for side return extension Islington" ever lands on it. Search can bring you the right homeowners and the right commercial clients. It cannot make a studio with no completed projects look established, and we will not try.
Rules that shape the work
4 rules, each linked to its source
What we will and will not do for architects and interior designers, and why. Where a point is unclear for your case we read the current guidance before we publish rather than guess.
The valuable searches in this sector are project-shaped and place-shaped. A homeowner does not search "architecture practice London". They search "architect for house extension Islington", "loft conversion architect north London", "planning permission architect Hackney" or "side return extension cost Walthamstow". A business fitting out space searches "office interior design Shoreditch" or "restaurant interior designer Soho". A homeowner at the finishing stage searches "interior designer Chelsea" or "kitchen designer Wimbledon". Each of those is a different page with a different intent, and most studio websites have none of them.
The second thing to understand is that London planning is borough-by-borough, and so is the search. A homeowner in a conservation area in Islington wants to know you have taken a project through that council. One in Kensington and Chelsea wants basement and listed-building experience. A client in Southwark wants to see what you have done on the Victorian terraces around Peckham and Camberwell. Project pages that name the borough, the planning route and the building type are how you appear for those searches, and they are honest, because the work was really done there.
The third pattern is that research searches come before the hire. "Do I need an architect for an extension", "how much does an architect cost in London", "permitted development loft conversion rules" are searched by exactly the people who go on to hire. Answering them well, with your own experience and without hard selling, is the cheapest way to meet a client before your competitors do.
This sector has a rule that trips up marketing more than any other: the word "architect". Under the Architects Act 1997 only people on the Architects Registration Board’s register may use the title in business. If your studio is led by registered architects, we say so and verify it. If it is not, your pages, your Google Business Profile category and your schema use "architectural designer", "design studio" or "design and build", and we never let a keyword tool talk you into the protected word. The same discipline applies to "RIBA Chartered Practice" and "Chartered Architect": claims only members in good standing can make, and ones we check before they appear.
The ARB’s Architects Code requires honesty in promotional material, and the ASA’s CAP Code applies to your website claims. Planning success rates, project counts, timescales and cost ranges are all claims, so they appear only with a basis you can show. Project photography is yours or licensed, credited to the photographer where the licence requires, and never a render presented as a finished building. Before-and-after images are genuine and of the same property.
Portfolio sites hide the information search engines and clients need behind a grid of images. Our SEO content work turns each completed project into a page with the borough, the building type, the brief, the planning route, the constraints and the outcome, written in plain English alongside the photography. A side-return extension in Islington, a basement in Kensington, a Peckham loft and a Shoreditch office fit-out become four pages that each answer a real search. Service pages for extensions, lofts, refurbishments, new builds and interiors sit above them, and the research guides your clients search for sit alongside.
Image-heavy sites are often slow, and slow sites rank and convert worse on the phones most homeowners use. Through website design we build or rebuild studio sites that keep the photography large and the pages fast, with image formats and lazy loading handled properly, clear enquiry routes and the project structure above baked into the templates. If you keep your current site we fix what can be fixed in place and tell you plainly what cannot.
Studios are local businesses to the homeowners who hire them. Our local SEO work sets up or repairs your Google Business Profile with the correct category (which depends on your registration), real project photographs and a steady post rhythm, and builds the borough pages that match where your work actually is. We do not create pages for boroughs you have never worked in; the project list decides the map.
For a design business, social media is the portfolio in motion: site visits, material samples, the moment the steel goes in, the finished room. Our social media marketing plans and produces that content with your team, so prospective clients who find you in search see a studio that is busy, and clients who see you on Instagram can search your name and find a site that agrees with the feed.
We have done social and creative work for Muse Architects. No performance figures are published for that work, and it is not an SEO result, so we do not present it as one; it shows that we understand how to present a practice’s work visually, and nothing more. We have not published an architecture or interiors SEO case. If you become one, these are the figures we would report, each with its source and the date it was checked.
A design business wants to see the plan before the invoice, so here is the first month in order. The full 90-day plan is on the how we work page.
Homeowners hiring an architect or designer read Google reviews and Houzz profiles, and commercial clients read case studies and LinkedIn. We keep review requests simple and within the platforms’ rules: ask the client at practical completion, when the work is visible and the relationship is warm; never incentivise; never filter; and reply to every review, including the difficult one about the overrun, with the honesty a future client will respect. Project pages and reviews reinforce each other, because the review mentions the extension and the project page shows it. The Google reviews guide covers the mechanics and the rules.
Residential extension and refurbishment searches are strongest in the inner boroughs of Victorian and Edwardian housing: Islington, where conservation-area constraints make homeowners look for a studio with local planning experience; Kensington and Chelsea, where basements, listed buildings and high-specification interiors dominate; and Southwark, where lofts and side returns around Peckham, Camberwell and Dulwich are a steady market. Commercial interiors searches cluster around Shoreditch and the City fringe. Wherever your projects are, the work is delivered from our Tower 42 office in the City, by appointment, and we come to your studio.
Your project and service pages are planned by our SEO Specialist and written with our content team; site builds and speed work are led by our Full-Stack Developer and Lead and our Web Designer; social is run by our Head of Social Media Strategy with our photographer and videographer. Everyone is named with a real role on the team page. None of them will claim to be an architect, and we will not claim sector experience we do not have; what we bring is search, build and content craft, applied to your projects. The first 90 days are set out before you commit.
A one-person studio with five completed projects and a strong referral network may only need its project pages and Business Profile put right, which the guide to content that ranks and the scorecard can help with for nothing. A studio with twenty projects across several boroughs, or a design-and-build firm competing for extension work, is where a retainer earns its keep. Prices and terms are on the pricing page; if you are rebuilding your site first, read the website redesign SEO checklist so the new portfolio does not lose what the old one had.
