Density first
In Dalston or on Broadway Market a searcher can be within a five-minute walk of twenty businesses in your category, and the map pack shows three. Proximity decides a lot of that, and you cannot move. The levers that remain are the ones we work on: a Business Profile with the right primary category and every service listed, photographs that are recent and taken by you, a review profile that is replied to, and a page on your site for each thing you do. In a dense market the complete listing wins the tie, and most of the ties in Hackney are still unclaimed.
Shoreditch is its own market
Shoreditch behaves differently from the rest of the borough. Its searchers are mostly workers and visitors rather than residents, its business mix is agencies, tech firms, bars and co-working rather than nurseries and plumbers, and its competition reaches into the City and Tower Hamlets. For that reason it has its own page, and if your business is in Shoreditch or Hoxton that page is the one to read. This page covers the rest of Hackney, where residents do most of the searching.
Residents, markets and the night-time trade
Hackney has three search rhythms. Weekday daytime searches come from residents and from people working from home, and they are practical: a dentist, an electrician, a nursery, a vet. Evening searches in Dalston, Shoreditch and Hackney Central are for food and drink and are decided by photographs and the last month’s reviews. Weekend searches cluster around the markets, Broadway Market on Saturdays, Chatsworth Road on Sundays, Ridley Road through the week, and reward businesses whose opening hours and listings are accurate for the day in question. We look at the three separately in Search Console and Business Profile data, because the words and the services people want differ.
Who you are competing with
Hackney’s competition is mostly other independents, which cuts both ways. Few have a marketing budget, so a complete listing and a well-built site stand out quickly. But many have loyal followings and strong review profiles earned over years, and nothing we do can shortcut that. Where a competitor has a thousand reviews and you have forty, the plan is to grow yours steadily within platform rules and to win the searches they are not writing for: the specific service, the specific street, the specific need.
