The City of London is the one area page on this site that can honestly say "based here". In Wikipedia’s words the City was "established by the Romans around 47 AD as Londinium" and "forms the historic centre of the wider London metropolis"; it is "a unique local authority area governed by the City of London Corporation" rather than a borough council, which is why it is counted alongside the 32 boroughs rather than among them. For search it is unusual in a more practical way. Almost nobody lives here and a very large number of people work here, so the customer for nearly every City business is a worker searching between meetings, on a phone, for something within a few minutes’ walk.
Our office is Tower 42, 25 Old Broad Street, EC2N 1HN, between Liverpool Street and Bank. The work for every client, in the City and across London, is delivered from here, by appointment: there is no walk-in reception for us at the tower, and the people named on this site visit clients across London, so the first meeting can be at your premises, by video or here on Old Broad Street. Call +44 7435 755127 and a person answers during office hours.
The City uses the EC1 to EC4 postcode areas, and the sub-districts matter because they map onto its quarters. EC2M and EC2N are Liverpool Street, Broadgate and Old Broad Street; EC2R is Bank and Lothbury; EC2V is Guildhall and Gresham Street; EC2Y is the Barbican. EC3A, EC3M and EC3V are the insurance quarter around Leadenhall Market, Lloyd’s and Fenchurch Street; EC3N is Tower Hill and the Aldgate edge; EC3R is Monument and Lower Thames Street. EC4A is Fleet Street, EC4M St Paul’s and Paternoster Square, EC4N Cannon Street, and EC1A Smithfield and St Bartholomew’s. The EC1 and EC2 areas spill north into Islington and Hackney: Clerkenwell and Shoreditch are not the City, and the Shoreditch page covers the tech and creative cluster on the other side of the boundary.
The business mix is two economies stacked on top of each other. The first is the one the City is known for: banks, insurers, asset managers, law firms along the Fleet Street and Temple edge, accountancy and consulting practices, recruiters and a growing fintech layer. The second is the service economy that keeps the first one fed, groomed and healthy: dentists and clinics with early and late appointments, physiotherapists, gyms, barbers, tailors and dry cleaners, lunch counters, restaurants and bars, hotels, florists and printers. The two compete in completely different ways, and most of what follows is about telling them apart.
What people search for here
5 searches
Five searches we would expect from City customers:
If your customers make the first, third or fifth kind of search, the local pack is your market and your Google Business Profile is the work. If they make the second or fourth, the website is the market and the profile is a supporting act. Most City businesses have never had anyone tell them which they are.
Who you are competing with
For the professional firms, the contest is national and often international: brand terms, sector terms and the firm’s own name, fought on the website with content, structure and authority rather than on a map. For the service economy, the contest is the densest local pack in the country. Proximity to the searcher’s building decides more here than anywhere else in London, so a clinic on Moorgate and an identical clinic on Cannon Street are not really competing; each is competing with the three nearest to it. Opening hours matter in a way they do not elsewhere, because a profile that says "closed" at 7am on a Tuesday loses the day.
A word about ourselves, since this is our borough. We are new to this market: the UK company behind London SEO Agency was incorporated in September 2024, we have no published client in the City yet, and we have no public reviews of our own to show you. We say so here rather than let a page imply otherwise. What we can show is the method, the people and the cases from elsewhere, with their figures and sources.
In City of London
City search runs on a weekday clock. Demand builds from about eight in the morning, peaks around lunchtime and tails off after seven; weekends are quiet and bank holidays quieter. For a City business this means three practical things. Your Business Profile hours must be right, including the early and late slots that are your real advantage over a suburban rival. Your photographs and posts should show the place as it looks to a worker walking in, not a stock image. And if your footfall is heavier on some weekdays than others, your content and your review requests should follow that rhythm rather than a generic weekly schedule. Residents exist, in the Barbican and a few other pockets, but they are not the market for most firms here.

Districts within
No district page yet
None of the twelve district pages on this site sits inside the City; the Square Mile is small enough to be one market, and this page covers it from Smithfield to Tower Hill. Two neighbouring districts matter to City firms, though. Shoreditch, across the boundary in Hackney, is where much of the City’s technology and creative supply chain sits, and Canary Wharf in Tower Hamlets is the other financial centre, with a very similar weekday search pattern. If you have premises in both, the guide to multi-location SEO in London explains how to run two profiles without them competing.
How we approach ranking here
We start by deciding which of the two economies you are in, because the plan is different. For a map-pack business we check the local pack from several points in the City, since results change between Bank and Blackfriars, then work through the Business Profile in a fixed order: primary category, services, hours including early and late slots, photographs from the last 90 days, and a reply to your last five reviews. For a website business we audit the structure, fix what stops Google reading the site, and build one page per service and per sector you genuinely serve, written to the relevant regulator’s rules. In both cases we set up a review process that works within the platform’s terms. The method is written up in full in our guide to ranking in your London borough.
Technical fixes are usually re-crawled within two to eight weeks. Local search changes often show within one to three months. Competitive City head terms, particularly in finance and law, usually take six to twelve months or longer. These are typical ranges from our own work, not a promise for your site, and we report every month so you can see which it is.
Local London
A business can be first in Barnet and invisible in Enfield, two miles away. This guide explains why ranking in London is decided borough by borough and often street by street, which place names to build around, how to write area pages that help rather than harm, and how to measure what each borough is sending you.

No published client in City of London yet. Our nearest published London client is in Barnet: reels-first social and reputation work for Blac, which holds 4.6 stars across 341 Google reviews and 7.9/10 on TheFork (figures as at 7 Jul 2026). Those review figures are Blac’s own, earned from its customers; our work was the content and the reply process around them. The two cases shown below this section come from the wider group’s work outside London and are labelled as such. One is the only case in which we publish measured search uplift, with the ranges and the tools named; the other is a business trusted by national organisations that was invisible to local search until the work was done, which is the position many City firms are in. Every case on the case studies page names the figure, the source and the date.

The three boroughs nearest to the City are Islington to the north, Tower Hamlets to the east and Southwark across the river, each with its own page. Under the Greater London Authority’s London Plan grouping, the City is one of the seven Central London areas, so the Central London page is its compass page. The areas of London hub lists all 33 boroughs, with the three nearest our office marked.
