Shopify SEO in London

Shopify SEO from a team that also builds Shopify stores. Collections and product pages shaped around what London shoppers type, theme speed fixed in the code, duplicate URLs brought under control, structured data that validates, and buying content that earns the click.

Who it is for

3 London scenarios

Who this is for in London

Shopify is the platform we see most often among London brands that started on Instagram, at a market or in a single shop and now sell nationally. The platform is good at selling and quiet about search: it ships a store that works, but it also ships duplicate URLs, a blog nobody uses and a theme that slows down with every app installed. Shopify SEO is the work of making that store rank for the searches that lead to orders. Three situations we meet most weeks:

  • A Shoreditch fashion label with a few hundred products, selling from a studio off Redchurch Street, that ranks for its own name and almost nothing else. The collections describe the brand’s own seasons, not what a shopper types, so "linen shirts women" lands on a competitor while the label’s linen shirts sit three clicks deep.
  • A Hackney homeware brand that moved from a marketplace to Shopify and brought its catalogue with it. Every product now lives under three collection URLs, the supplier descriptions are shared with twenty other stores, and the tag pages have quietly become the most indexed part of the site.
  • A Soho beauty brand with a strong social following and a store that takes several seconds to show its first product on a phone. The audience arrives, the page stalls, and the search traffic that should have followed the brand never did.

It also fits a London shop that sells both ways: a Wimbledon bike store or a Marylebone bookshop whose website needs ecommerce visibility and whose shop needs the local search work beside it. What it is not for: a dropshipping store built on supplier copy with nothing of its own to say. We turn those down, because the honest answer is that search will not carry a store with no reason to be chosen.

What you get

Collection architecture
Collections, sub-collections and filters mapped to the searches shoppers actually make, so the store has a page for each buying intent instead of one long catalogue.
Product page optimisation
Titles, descriptions, image alt text, variant handling and internal links on the products that carry margin, written for a buyer, not pasted from the supplier.
Duplicate URL control
Canonicals for collection-nested product URLs, tag and vendor pages, pagination and variant parameters, so Google indexes one version of each page.
Theme speed work
App scripts audited and removed where unused, images sized and lazy-loaded, fonts and critical CSS handled, measured on a mid-range phone with field data.
Structured data
Product, Offer, BreadcrumbList and Organization markup that passes validation. Review markup only when the store holds real, visible reviews.
Buyer content
Buying guides, comparison pages and collection copy briefed from search data and written to answer the question before the purchase.
Navigation and internal linking
Menus, breadcrumbs and related-product links that pass authority to the collections that matter and keep every product within three clicks.
Monthly report in sales terms
Organic sessions, add-to-basket and revenue by landing page from GA4 and Search Console, with what we did and what is next.

Process

5 steps

How it works

  1. 01

    Store audit

A full crawl of the store, Search Console and GA4 read by a person, a review of the theme and every installed app, and a list of what is holding the store back, in order.

  2. 02

    Search map

Which collections and products to target, which searches have London and UK demand, and which pages the store needs but does not have.

  3. 03

    Fixes in the theme

Canonicals, templates, metafields, speed and structured data changed in a duplicate theme, tested, then published. You keep the theme and the code.

  4. 04

    Content and links

Collection copy, buying guides and product descriptions written and published; relevant links and mentions earned, never bought.

  5. 05

    Measure and repeat

A written report every month, a 90-day review, and the next set of priorities agreed with you.

How we do it

Collections first, because collections are where the demand is

Most of the searches that lead to a purchase are category searches: "mid-century sideboard", "vegan trainers uk", "wedding guest dresses". On Shopify those searches belong to collection pages, so the structure of your collections decides what the store can rank for. We map the searches shoppers make against the collections you have, create the collections you are missing (often sub-collections, filtered views or "best for" pages), and write collection copy that reads like a buyer’s guide rather than a line of keywords above a grid. Where a collection page has nothing to say, we say nothing and let the products do the work.

Products that describe the thing you are selling

Product pages rank for the long, specific searches that convert best: the model, the material, the size, the problem it solves. We rewrite titles and descriptions for the products that carry margin, fix image alt text, handle variants so that colours and sizes do not become near-duplicate pages, and connect each product to the collections and guides it belongs with. Supplier descriptions are replaced where they are shared with other stores, because a page Google has seen twenty times before has no reason to rank yours.

Duplicate URLs brought under control

Shopify creates a product URL under every collection the product sits in, plus the root product URL, and the theme decides which one the shop links to. Add tag pages, vendor pages, pagination and sort parameters and a store of 300 products can expose thousands of URLs. We make the theme link to the canonical product URL, set canonicals and robots directives in the theme where Shopify allows them, decide which tag and vendor pages deserve to exist, and confirm the result in Search Console’s indexing reports rather than assuming it.

Speed fixed in the code, not in a plugin

Shopify themes slow down the same way every time: apps that inject scripts on every page long after the app stopped being used, hero images uploaded at full size, fonts loaded from three places and sliders nobody asked for. Our developers audit every installed app and its scripts, remove what is dead, size and lazy-load images, and work on the theme itself. We measure with field data from real Chrome users, not a lab score, and we tell you honestly when a fix would need a theme rebuild rather than a tweak.

Structured data that validates

Product and Offer markup lets Google show price and availability in the result. Breadcrumb markup shows the path. We implement it in the theme, validate every template, and add review markup only where the store holds real reviews that visitors can see on the page. Marking up ratings that do not exist is a short route to a manual action, and we do not do it.

Content that answers the question before the purchase

A shopper searching "how to measure for a made-to-order blind" is a few days from buying one. Buying guides, comparisons and care pages built around those questions bring in the people who will shortly search for the product, and they give the collections something worth linking to. We brief every piece from search data and have it edited by someone who knows the category. More on how that works on the SEO content page.

What changes, and when

Technical fixes are usually re-crawled within two to eight weeks, so canonical and indexing changes tend to show first in Search Console’s coverage and then in impressions. Collection pages built for real demand usually begin to move within one to three months. Competitive London and UK head terms in fashion, beauty and homeware usually take six to twelve months. These are typical ranges from our own work, not a promise for your store, and we report every month so you can see which range you are in.

What you will have in hand before any ranking moves: a store that indexes cleanly, product pages that describe what you sell, collections that match demand, a theme that loads properly on a phone, and a written record of every change so your own team or your next agency can see what was done. We do not guarantee rankings or revenue. Google says nobody can, and our code of ethics says the same in writing.

How it is measured

We report in the terms a store owner uses: organic sessions by landing page, add-to-basket and checkout rate from organic traffic, revenue attributed to organic in GA4, the collections and products gaining impressions and clicks in Search Console, and the indexing picture (how many URLs Google knows about against how many should exist). Every figure comes from accounts that sit in your name, so you can open the source and check. A written report arrives every month and we meet at the 90-day point to decide, together, whether the work is paying and what to do next. More detail on reporting is in the guide to what to expect from SEO reporting.

Proof we can show you: our Shopify work includes the storefront build and retail search work for Ideal Furniture World and the store, product catalogue and point-of-sale development for Jaquar Midlands. Both are shown as delivery scope, with no sales uplift claimed because none is published. Neither is a London store; we say so rather than imply otherwise.

What it costs to find out

Before any quote, we review the store for free. The free SEO audit is a written review by an SEO specialist, delivered within two working days of your request: where the store shows up today for the five searches that matter most to it, the duplicate URL and indexing problems we can see, the speed picture from field data, the collection gaps against the two stores that outrank you, and the three fixes that matter most, written so you could do them yourself. No automated score, no call required, three fields on the form. Pricing for the ongoing work is on the pricing page, with every inclusion listed and the terms beside it.

Common mistakes we see on London Shopify stores

  • Collections named after the brand’s own language ("The Edit", "New In", "Icons") with no page for the category searches shoppers make.
  • Tag pages, vendor pages and "collections/all" indexed by the thousand while the main collections carry no copy at all.
  • Supplier product descriptions shared with every other stockist, so no page on the store has a reason to outrank the others.
  • A theme carrying scripts from a dozen apps, half of them uninstalled, measured only by a lab tool on a desktop.
  • Review markup on products with no visible reviews, or ratings pulled from a widget that no longer renders.
  • A blog with three posts from the launch month and no connection to any collection.
  • A redesign or theme switch done without a redirect plan, losing the URLs that had earned rankings. Our redesign checklist covers what to protect.
  • International selling turned on without hreflang or market-specific URLs, so the UK store competes with its own copies.

How it fits with other services

Shopify SEO is ecommerce SEO applied to one platform, and the platform knowledge is the point: the duplicate URL behaviour, the theme architecture and the app ecosystem are specific to Shopify. The technical SEO team does the crawl and speed work; SEO content writes the collection copy and buying guides; conversion rate optimisation turns the traffic into orders once it arrives; and if the store needs a new theme or a rebuild, the web design team builds it with the search work already in the plan. For the whole picture of what a store should have in place, read the Shopify SEO guide and the broader ecommerce SEO guide. London stores selling to the people around them, in Hackney, Westminster or any other borough, should pair this with local SEO for the shop itself.

Questions

10 questions

Shopify SEO: questions answered

Do you guarantee rankings or sales for a Shopify store?
No. No honest agency can. Google itself says nobody can guarantee a ranking, and a promise like that would breach the UK advertising code. What we guarantee is the work: the deliverables for your tier are listed, and if we miss a listed deliverable in a month for a reason within our control, that month is credited.
How long does Shopify SEO take to show results?
Technical and indexing fixes are usually re-crawled within two to eight weeks. New or rebuilt collection pages often begin to move within one to three months. Competitive head terms in fashion, beauty and homeware usually take six to twelve months. These are typical ranges from our own work, not a promise for your store, and the monthly report shows which range you are in.
Is there a minimum contract?
There is no minimum term. You can leave on 30 days’ written notice, including in month one, and you keep the theme, the content, the accounts and everything else we produced. The full terms are set out in plain English on our before-you-sign page. These terms are proposed and are confirmed in writing before you sign.
Who does the work on my store?
A named account lead, an SEO specialist and a developer who works in Shopify themes. You can see every person on the team page, with real names and photographs. Changes are made in a duplicate theme, tested and published with your approval.
What decides the price?
The number of products and collections, how competitive your categories are in London and the UK, how much content the store needs, whether the theme needs rebuilding or just fixing, and how many links or mentions the plan calls for each month. Every tier and inclusion is on the pricing page; we never quote a figure that is not there.
Do we need Shopify Plus for this to work?
No. Almost everything that matters for search is available on standard Shopify plans. Plus adds checkout customisation and some automation, which matter for conversion and operations rather than rankings. If we think an upgrade would pay for itself, we will say so and explain why.
Can you work alongside our existing Shopify developer or agency?
Yes, and often that is the best arrangement. We can specify the changes, review their implementation and report on the results, or make the theme changes ourselves if you prefer. Either way the brief, the code and the accounts stay in your name.
Will SEO changes break our theme or our apps?
Every change is made in a duplicate of the live theme, tested on desktop and phone, and published only when you have seen it. Removing dead app scripts is one of the most valuable speed fixes we make, and we confirm with you that each app is genuinely unused before anything is removed.
We sell outside the UK too. Does that change the approach?
Yes. Shopify Markets, currency and language settings create extra URLs that need hreflang and a clear canonical plan, otherwise the UK store competes with its own copies. We cover that within the Shopify work and bring in our international SEO team for anything beyond a second market.
We are moving to Shopify from WooCommerce or Magento. Can you help?
Yes. A platform move is the moment most stores lose rankings, usually through URLs changing without redirects and content being left behind. We plan the URL mapping, redirects, content migration and launch checks as part of our SEO migration service, and the Shopify SEO work starts once the new store is live.
